FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., Feb. 4 (UPI) — Outbreaks of a gastrointestinal virus have been reported on two Princess Cruises ships operating out of Port Everglades, Fla., officials said.
A total of 240 people became ill with Norovirus on the Crown Princess and Ruby Princess, The Palm Beach Post reported. The Crown Princess docked Saturday morning, and the Ruby Princess was scheduled to arrive Sunday.
Embarkation for both ships was to be delayed by a few hours to give crews time to do a thorough cleaning.
Norovirus causes a range of symptoms, including upset stomach and vomiting. The infection usually runs its course in three days or less without treatment and without doing any long-term damage.
The virus is highly contagious. The Centers for Disease Control reports about 12 percent of the population is infected every year, while the equivalent figure for cruise ship passengers is 0.028 percent.
On the Crown Princess, about 4 percent of the passengers or 140 people were infected along with 18 members of the crew. On the Ruby Princess, 81 passengers, about 2 percent of the total, and nine crew members became ill.

A new breed of malware has taken data theft one step further – it now grabs document and spreadsheet files and uploads them to a cloud-based file hosting service.
Computer security firm Trend Micro said the new malware it recently encountered particularly sends the stolen files to Sendspace.com.
“Sendspace was recently used for dropping stolen data but wasn’t done automatically by malware. As reported late last year, hackers used Sendspace for rounding up and uploading stolen data… However, this is the first time we’re seeing malware being used to upload stolen data to the file hosting and transfer site,” it said.
In this attack, the infection starts with a malicious file, Fedex_Invoice.exe, detected as TROJ_DOFOIL.GE.
Trend Micro said the filename suggests the malware is used for a spam campaign using messages disguised as a FedEx shipment notification.
Once executed, TROJ_DOFOIL.GE downloads and executes
TSPY_SPCESEND.A, a “grab and go” Trojan that searches the local drive of an affected system for MS Word (document) and Excel (spreadsheet) files.
“The collected documents are then archived and password-protected using a random-generated password in the user’s temporary folder,” Trend Micro said.
After creating the archive, TSPY_SPCESEND.A sends it to Sendspace.com and the malware retrieves the Sendspace download link, and then sends the link to the command-and-control server, along with the generated password for the archive.
“Malware utilizing free online services are definitely not unheard of. Utilizing a public file hosting site is yet another clever way for cybercriminals to store stolen data as they do not need to set up a server that will store large amount of data,” Trend Micro said.
Possible new trend
It added such use of “extended networks” or external file storage infrastructures can fast become a trend with the criminals.
“We’ve seen dropsites/dropzones for stolen/exfiltrated data that are hosted also within domains owned by the cybercriminals. Now, we’re seeing legitimate ‘clouds’ being used by criminals where they can drop and pickup their loot,” it said.
It added this may be a serious concern for the

DETROIT (WWJ) - Leading free email providers like Google, Microsoft and Yahoo are teaming up in an effort to prevent “phishing” scams. As WWJ’s Rob Sanford reports, the unprecedented effort was announced this week.
The companies have created a working group – DMARC.org – to promote a standard set of email technologies that they say will lead to more secure email.
According to its website, DMARC, which stands for “Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting Conformance,” standardizes how email receivers perform email authentication. This means that senders will experience consistent authentication results for their messages at AOL, Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo! and any other email receiver implementing DMARC.
With the rise of the social internet and e-commerce, spammers have a tremendous financial incentive to compromise user accounts, enabling theft of passwords, bank accounts, credit cards and more. Email is easy to manipulate and criminals have found spoofing to be a proven way to exploit user trust of well-known brands. Simply inserting the logo of a well-known brand into an email gives it instant legitimacy with many users.
CNET executive editor Molly Wood said phishing is threatening the legitimacy of email.
“I think it’s hard sometimes for these companies to work together. They don’t always think it’s in their best interest to come together, but I think it’s gotten to the point now where phishing scams are so prevalent, that all of these companies are worried that their customers are going to stop trusting their legitimate email,” said Wood.
The arrangement will not stop all spam or phishing but will stop what they call a “significant chunk” of malicious messages sent.
DMARC helps email senders and receivers work together to better secure emails, protecting users and brands from painfully costly abuse. Find more information at DMARC.org.
